Care Association of New Jersey Nursing Facility Locator
Nursing Homes (also
called Nursing Facilities, Long Term Care Facilities, Convalescent
Centers, or Health Care Centers)
These facilities provide skilled nursing, rehabilitation,
respite care and other health-related services. Nursing
care is provided around the clock with an emphasis on attaining
the highest possible level of functioning for the individual.
Services are generally provided based on an interdisciplinary
assessment of the resident's needs including assistance
with activities of daily living (i.e. eating, dressing,
bathing). Usually, nursing facilities offer private and
semi-private rooms with common areas for dining, therapy
and recreation. They also offer the benefits of social services
and a comprehensive activities program for residents.

Assisted Living Facilities/ Comprehensive
Personal Care Homes (ALF's, CPCH’s)
ALF’s and CPCH’s are designed to allow residents to "age
in place" while maintaining their independence in a
home like environment. These facilities assure that residents
receive supportive health, social services and assistance
with activities of daily living (i.e. eating, dressing,
and bathing). Both ALF’s and CPCH’s feature an apartment-style
set up with a bathroom, kitchenette and lockable doors.
There are also common areas for dining and recreation in
the facility.
There are several basic differences between the ALF and
the CPCH. Apartments in an ALF must come equipped with a
kitchenette; CPCH apartments may or may not have this feature.
In the ALF, all units are private. A resident may or may
not choose to have someone else live with them (i.e. a spouse
or friend). In a CPCH, units may or may not be private;
many are semi-private units in which two unrelated residents
live.

Residential Health Care Facilities
(RHCF's)
RHCF's cater to residents who are self-mobile, are not in
need of 24 hour skilled nursing and able to perform activities
of daily living (i.e. bathing, dressing and grooming) with
minimal assistance. The RHCF provides 24 hour protective
oversight, personal care services (i.e. laundry service),
medication supervision and assistance and recreational activities.
The RHCF focuses more on the social needs of the "resident"
than on the medical needs of the "patient". RHCF's
also offer semi-private and private rooms and common areas
for dining and recreation.
